To See Yourself as Others See You

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I like to think I am a reasonably conscious individual. I have grown to realize the importance of considering where others are coming from when they interact with me. It has helped me know that a negative reaction is not always about me.

The idea that before I criticize anyone’s behavior I need to “walk a mile in their moccasins” has served me well. But every once in a while something happens that makes me wish that I could see myself as others see me. Perhaps then I could know why they say and do what they do towards me.

In astrology, Mercury represents your conscious mind and how it is placed in you birth chart gives clues to just how objective or subjective your preceptions of reality may be. If Mercury is within 8-10 degrees of the Sun, it is said to be “combust.”

Mercury combust the Sun is not visible in the sky and connotes a perpeptual ability that is overpowered by the Sun’s egoic function. This Sun-Mercury combination, on the plus side, indicates good intellectual functioning, but a poor ability to consider another person’s perspective. It would, therefore, be more difficult to imagine where others are coming from and the idea of “walking a mile in another’s moccasins” does not compute.

Mercury is never more that 28 degrees away from the Sun so this lack of objectivity can be pretty common among humans. But my Mercury is 16 degrees behind my Sun and in a previous sign. My objectivity ought to be pretty well-functioning. And most times it is.

Still, each of us looks out at the external landscape of our lives through our own unique life-experience-created glasses. It’s a wonder we communicate as well as we do.

At times, I cannot help wishing that I could know how I am being perceived. It would, I believe, add useful information to my self-understanding and grist for the mill of my conscious evolutionary growth.

Ah, to see yourself as others see you.

Comparing Yourself with Others – Mentally

Monday, March 19th, 2007

The trouble with comparing yourself with others mentally is that there will always be someone smarter that you. Whatever topic you choose, there is an expert who can claim greater knowledge.

But are your mental abilities able to be compared with anyone else? That is the question. Each of us has been born into a different culture and clan with different values regarding knowledge and education. Oriental cultures, generally speaking, place a strong emphasis on educational achievement. Other cultures may prize woodworking skills or creative talents.

I was the first in my family to go to college. My intelligence was praised, but unfairly used to urge my siblings to excel when college was never their interest.

Truth is one brother excelled at sales, another efficiently handled airline baggage, and yet another safely delivered goods by truck. Each has their own area of expertise.

What excites me is the wonderous range of topics for which there are experts from astrophysics to zoology. Society’s knowledge base is growing rapidly as a result. However, if everyone excelled at medicine, who would repair my car?

No matter what level of school you have reached, it is only when it is applied in real life situtations that it has any value. Knowledge is what we learned from books or others, but wisdom comes from personal application of that learning.

Therefore, if you find your inner critic has compared you negatively to another who appears smarter, don’t listen. Instead, consider how wonderful it is that someone knows more than you do in some category of life. From them you are able to benefit or learn, if you choose to.

Remember also to honor your own wisdom gained from putting what you’ve learned into practical application.

Pisces New Moon – There’s More to The Secret

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

The movie (also a book) called The Secret has been getting lots of publicity lately. Perhaps you learned about in on Oprah or from Larry King. Everywhere I turn someone is talking about it. I confess I am amazed yet pleased at its popularity. Obviously, it is an idea whose time has come as Pluto finishes its passage through Sagittarius, the sign of goals and aspirations. Yes, the knowledge (and use) of the law of attraction is a powerful asset for creating the life of your dreams, but is it that simple and does it always work?

There are 3 principles I think are vitally important to understanding the law of attraction. Without these understandings, you could become discouraged and disillusioned and revert to negative thinking.

1 – You’ve got to love this moment with appreciation and gratitude.

Sure, it is wonderful to design an ideal life which includes the best job, house, car, relationship, etc., but the law of attraction won’t work if you are and trying to run away from the moment by dreaming of a better life in the future. Your thoughts of misery will only bring you more misery. You have to find and appreciate what is good in the present moment. That is where the power to create a better next moment is found. Out of gratitude more will be given. Read anything by Eckhart Tolle or Byron Katie for more on this.

I learned this while working in a corporate job that I hated. I sent out dozens of resumes, got one interview, and realized that job would have been worse than the one I was in. After spinning my wheels, I relaxed and decided to stay where I was until the urge to leave my unhappiness was transformed into the urge to go toward what I truly desired. At that point I hadn’t a clue of what I wanted. I had only wanted to run away from where I was.

2 – You’ve got to put your desires into action

It isn’t enough to dream dreams and hope to have them land in your lap. If you really believe in your dreams, you must take the steps needed to manifest them. Often, it starts with the power of the words you speak and then you back up the words with action. This is different from trying to make things happen which is born out of an attempt to control and manipulate an outcome. It is more like doing your part in creating the environment from which your desires can appear.

For example, currently I have the desire to write a book. I have been talking about it for several months, but I don’t even have a working title. It is more or less a vague desire urged from within. I recently created a Blog so I would be encouraged to write more often than once a month for this newsletter. However, I often go a week or 10 days before writing in the blog. Just yesterday I finally decided I must take action to create the environment out of which a book could arise by setting aside two hours a day to do nothing but write. If I want the inspiration to come for writing the book, I need to take the action of setting aside time for the words to appear.

3 – We do not have ultimate control of the outcome and timing is not in our hands

This truth has been proven to me time and again as an astrologer. I can see in a client’s chart whether or not the year ahead holds possibilities for manifesting a particular desire. All of life has cycles, like breathing in and breathing out. Just because you desire something does not mean you are currently in a cycle of acquiring. You might be in a cycle of letting go. The law of attraction is about “co-creating” with the Universe or God. From a higher wisdom, what we desire may not yet be right for us. We must sometimes hold the vision and keep the environment open for the manifestation of our dreams for a period of time before the time is right.

There was a time when I had a vision and strong yearning for a supportive partner, but it took along time and didn’t happen as quickly as I hoped. However, the timing of Chuck Adams entering my life was perfect. We both acknowledge that we were not really ready to appreciate the gift of each other one moment before we found each other. I had to kiss a few frogs first, as they say.

We create our life one thought, one moment at a time. Don’t let your expectations of mansions and Mercedes leave you frustrated and disillusioned. You can find a love-filled, abundant and fulfilling life by living in harmony with the present moment (loving what is), acting to create an environment from which you can grow, and acknowledging that timing will always be influenced by cycles of receiving and letting go. I call it the “Divine Dance of Life.”

Comparing Yourself to Others

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I have observed that the greatest barrier to our joy and peace is comparing ourselves to others. Our rational mind is always sorting sensory input and categorizing it by comparison and contrast. That person is skinnier than me – that person is smarter than me – than person is ____ than me. You fill in the blank. That’s the mind’s job.

The trouble lies not in the comparison, but in the beliefs and values we hold about needing to measure up or exceed in that comparison. Who says we need to be thinner or smarter than any one else. If we were living in Renaissance Europe being thinner would be shameful and indication of poverty.

Clearly, the measures we use to compare ourselves with others are culturally based and subject to change, which is to say they are meaningless to the Truth of who you really are. Your intrinsic worth or value simply cannot be measured against anyone else and doesn’t change through eternity.

Each of us is as unique as a snowflake, as rare a diamond – one-of-a-kind!

It was through Astrology that I learned this Truth and began letting go of all the judgments I held about not measuring up well against others. And it is as an astrologer that I have been able to prove this Truth.

Again and again, before me I see people whose life experiences and choices fill me with awe for the wonderful variety of ways to there are to live life. How magnificently unique is each individuals contribution to life!

There is more to say about this so I will continue on this theme in a few days…
