Cancer New Moon – Know Your Rudder

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer as much as I have. The Jupiter/Neptune conjunction has added a bit of a rosy glow to things, making it easier to live in the moment and not notice some of the harsh realities around us. But as I warned you in my April newsletter, this is only a temporary reprieve.

The economy is not getting better. We just tired of the bad news and more willing to overlook it at the moment. However, Jupiter and Neptune are both separating and in retrograde before their last meeting Dec 21.

Instead, the Saturn/Uranus opposition is moving toward their next confrontation on Sep 15, the third of five main events that began on Election Day 2008. We are being forced out of ruts that no longer serve us but when resistance to change is strong the vice-like pressure can create earthquakes, literally and figuratively speaking.

Furthermore, Saturn and Uranus both are moving slowly into position with the profound and permanent change agent, Pluto. There is much more to be said about that in the next few months.

What can one do to meet and manage through the changes ahead? I believe one of the most important things you need to know to thrive through this profound period in human history is a sense of purpose.

In the changing times ahead, you must know and keep your hand on your “rudder.”

I consider your life purpose or mission as the rudder for your life. Knowing why you are here is important. It should be guiding and directing your life choices. Without it, your life is fated to be blown about by the winds of change, without control and at the mercy of outer turbulence.

Do you know why you were born? What is your unique purpose and mission? Think of it as your gift to humanity, that special perspective, skill and/or ability that makes your heart sing when you express it.

At times when the uncertainties of the future loom large, it is by knowing and focusing on your personal mission that you can find the day-to-day grounding necessary to keep moving forward with a sense of joy and fulfillment. Remembering why you are here can give your life meaning at any time, but during times of social upheaval it is essential.

If you don’t know or are unsure, how do you find your rudder?
…Go inside and ask your inner guidance to tell you
…Consider your unique gifts – you may take them for granted since they come easy to you.
…Arrange an astrological consultation with me or another astrologer to understand your Soul’s purpose.

There may be other tools and techniques that also can be used. However, your life purpose not as likely to be a specific skill as much as it is a perception or essence that you contribute naturally.

Several years ago an inner voice told me my mission was “to teach self-love by honoring the uniqueness in each individual.” I wasn’t yet doing astrological consultations so I wondered how I would do that. I now know that is exactly what in private consultations.

During the months/years ahead, know what your “rudder” or purpose is, hold to your direction by making decisions and taking actions in alignment with that purpose and you will thrive. In fact, living “on purpose” is part of the change being called for and the way you will contribute to making this a better world for all of us.

I leave you with the words of Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th century philosopher, theologian and poet:

The One Thing You Must Do

There is one thing in this world which you must never forget to do. If you forget everything else and not this, there’s nothing to worry about, but if you remember everything else and forget this, then you will have done nothing in your life.

It’s as if a king has sent you to some country to do a task, and you perform a hundred other services, but not the one he sent you to do. So human beings come to this world to do particular work. That work is the purpose, and each is specific to the person. If you don’t do it, it’s as though a priceless Indian sword were used to slice rotten meat. It’s a golden bowl being used to cook turnips, when one filing from the bowl could buy a hundred suitable pots. It’s like a knife of the finest tempering nailed into a wall to hang things on.

You say, “But look, I’m using the dagger. It’s not lying idle.” Do you hear how ludicrous that sounds? For a penny an iron nail could be bought to serve for that. You say, “But I spend my energies on lofty enterprises, I study jurisprudence and philosophy and logic and astronomy and medicine and all the rest.” But consider why you do those things. They are all branches of yourself.

Remember the deep root of your being, the presence of your Lord. Give your life to the one who already owns your breath and your moments. If you don’t, you will be exactly like the man who takes a precious dagger and hammers it into his kitchen wall for a peg to hold his dipper gourd. You’ll be wasting valuable keenness and foolishly ignoring the dignity of your purpose. A Quote of Note

“If one does not know to which port he is sailing, no wind is favorable.” ~ Seneca, 45 BC-37 AD

What is your “Apollo 11″ experience?

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Today is the 40th anniversary of one of man’s paradigm breaking feats – the moment a man first walked on the moon.

I have a vivid memory of that day. As I watched the TV as Neil Armstrong took his step, I was nursing my first born, Erica, who was a mere 3 weeks old.

What an incredible accomplishment! President Kennedy’s visionary commitment to land a man on the moon was successful. It seemed to prove there were no limits on possibilities if only you set your mind (and committed your resources) to it.

But was it necessary? Perhaps not in the sense of absolute need. We have benefited, of course, from the inventions and discoveries that made it possible. But more than that, we gained a greater awareness of the universe we live in and the glory of dreams fulfilled.

Using that happening as a metaphor, I ask myself…when have I stretched to commit to something that at the time seemed unattainable? I know I did just that when I studied and passed my certification as a astrological professional. But that was several years ago now.

To do that I needed to focus and direct my energies toward that one goal. I did not allow distractions. I even cancelled magazine subscriptions because I didn’t want to be tempted to read anything but astrology books and magazines. It was that intense focus that made the difference between pass and fail.

What is your “Apollo 11″ experience? Surely there are new dreams, new goals, and new focuses calling for your attention. Will you commit to them? Or just drift from day to day.

Shake Up Routines with a Vacation

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

We just returned from a lovely driving tour of Maine and the maritime provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island). Moving back into the rhythms of my daily life, I realize it have the option to change whatever I have done before.

Rather than dive into answering email first thing, as has been my norm, I could establish an entirely new norm. Why not take a walk, meditate and then enter my office?

A vacation is an excellent tool to scramble your well-trodden life path, open up new vistas and possibilities and offer a fresh look at your life. Perhaps that is why it is well-known that a vacation can revitalize your attitude about your life. Do you need a revitalization plan?

Let me add my encouragement to not let the summer get away from you before you have found at least a long weekend to venture out of the ruts and into an exploration of some place, some experience and/or some one new.
